- Giants lose Jevon Holland after a brutal week on defense

The Giants will be without Jevon Holland against Houston. The team downgraded the safety from questionable to out Saturday as he remains in the concussion protocol, removing another starter from an already depleted defense.
Holland's status had been uncertain after he returned to limited practice Thursday and stayed limited Friday. Saturday's update resolved his game availability. It did not establish when he'll be cleared to return.
His absence comes alongside Greg Newsome II's concussion-related absence and Tremaine Edmunds' move to injured reserve. The Giants confirmed Edmunds' roster transaction Saturday, after the season-ending injury reports that emerged Friday.
Holland has three interceptions and two forced fumbles in six games this season, along with 30 tackles. Those are separate categories, rather than five guaranteed changes of possession, but they illustrate how often he has been involved around the ball.
There is also the coverage work that doesn't end in an interception. Removing a veteran safety changes the combinations available behind the corners, at the same time the defense is adjusting to Edmunds' departure from the middle.

The Giants activated Paulson Adebo from injured reserve Saturday, which helps the cornerback options. It doesn't put Holland back at safety or make Newsome available. The club is adding one player to its defensive choices while losing others.

The Giants elevated safety Raheem Layne from the practice squad as part of Saturday's moves. That supplies another available defensive back for the game-day group. It isn't, by itself, an announcement that Layne will start or inherit Holland's entire workload.
Tyler Nubin also carried a questionable designation on the team's final injury report because of a neck issue. The Giants still need to settle the available combinations rather than assume their usual safety group will be intact.
New York enters its bye after the Houston game. Any projection for Holland beyond that point needs a new team update; the current confirmed news is that he won't be available against the Texans.
