Football, perhaps more than all the others, is an unforgiving sport.
Thaddeus Dixon , whom the Giants signed as an undrafted rookie free agent, experienced the game's cruelty when he sustained a torn Achilles tendon during the team's rookie minicamp workouts on Wednesday, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport .
The injury will likely cost the defensive back the season.
Dixon was seen as one of the few undrafted signees who had the potential to make a big impact for Big Blue this season . During John Harbaugh's time in Baltimore, the Ravens had a penchant for finding talent and roster spots for undrafted players and Dixon could have continued that tradition in New York.
The Giants made just seven signings in addition to the seven-man draft class . Dixon signed one of the largest guaranteed deals of any rookie free agent around the league ($282,500), per Dan Duggan .
A hamstring injury may have cost Dixon from being selected in April's draft out of North Carolina , as he didn't work out in the pre-draft process. In his lone season with the Tar Heels after transferring from Washington, he had six passes defensed, 19 tackles (13 solo), with two going for a loss in seven games as an arm/shoulder injury cost him time on the field.
During his two seasons with the Huskies, he totaled two interceptions, 16 passes defensed, a forced fumble, 69 tackles (46 solo) with three going for losses in 27 games.
