The New York Giants will be down two starting defensive players against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Starting inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and cornerback Greg Newsome II were both ruled out Friday for their game at NRG Stadium.
Newsome sustained a concussion in the Giants' 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, and Edmunds has been battling a shoulder injury. Neither practiced this week, and both were listed as out.
Greg Newsome II, Tremaine Edmunds Ruled Out for Sunday's Game at Houston
Edmunds had played 100% of the team's defensive snaps this season and has been calling the defensive signals. But his shoulder injury was too much to overcome, which means Arvell Reese will probably wear the green dot and either rookie Jack Kelly or veteran Micah McFadden will start in his place.
Newsome was unlikely to be able to play in Houston, since he had to clear the NFL's multifaceted concussion protocol. But that likely puts rookie Colton Hood in a starting role playing opposite Deonte Banks against Houston's three-headed receiving corps of Nico Collins, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Tank Dell.
Hood took over for Newsome and got burned for Chris Olave's 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. But the rookie second-round pick has the 89th-best grade from Pro Football Focus (79.2) among 895 qualifying cornerbacks.
In addition to those two, tight end Theo Johnson is expected to miss second straight game with a neck injury. He's listed as doubtful.
Paulson Adebo Is Questionable
The Giants may not need Hood to start, since the team opened Paulson Adebo's 21-day return window from injured reserve this week.
Adebo, the Giants cornerback and highest-paid player, got three limited practice sessions in, which puts him on pace to play in Houston. But he is listed as questionable with the knee injury that landed him on IR.
The rest of the secondary is banged up, too. Safeties Jevon Holland (concussion) and Tyler Nubin (neck) are questionable, though both were limited in practice Friday.
The Giants could also be without their Nos. 1 and 2 right tackles on their depth chart, since Jermaine Eluemunor and Marcus Mbow are both listed as questionable. Giants coach John Harbaugh said Eluemunor was likely to go after missing the Giants' 34-27 loss against the New Orleans Saints with a calf injury.
Mbow, who took over for Eluemunor in the Giants' 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders, is nursing a knee injury.
