The Vegas Golden Knights were defeated in the Stanley Cup Final by the Carolina Hurricanes , and it's already a guarantee that next season's roster is going to look different than the squad that skated off the ice at T-Mobile Arena last month in defeat.
While the Golden Knights traded scoring forward Pavel Dorofeyev to the New York Rangers , one player they've ensured will be back for next season is part of the blue line. Defenseman Dylan Coghlan was re-signed by general manager Kelly McCrimmon to a two-year, one-way contract with a salary cap hit of $875,000.
The news was first reported by NHL Insider Chris Johnston.
" Dylan Coghlan signs a two-year, one-way extension with Vegas carrying an AAV of $875,000," Johnston wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Coghlan was never drafted into the NHL. He started his career playing in the British Columbia Hockey League before eventually being selected in the third round, 63rd overall, by the Tri-City Americans in the 2013 Bantam Draft.
He'd eventually be signed by the Golden Knights in 2017, though he would eventually be traded along with Max Pacioretty to the Hurricanes for future considerations in 2022. He played two years with the Hurricanes before once again being traded, this time to the Winnipeg Jets , also for future considerations.
On the opening day of NHL free agency in 2025, he re-joined the Golden Knights with a one-year contract, though he spent the majority of the season with the American Hockey League affiliate Henderson Silver Knights. An injury to Jeremy Lauzon forced his recall to the lineup, and he would get his first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal in the opening game of the Western Conference Final.
Appearing in 13 postseason games, he finished with a goal and two assists and four penalty minutes. In 115 career NHL games, he's scored six goals with 16 assists.
