One of the biggest changes during the most recent NHL offseason was the major sign-and-trade deal of Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights , moving on from the team he’d spent nearly the first decade of his NHL career with.
After a productive regular season, Marner has helped the Golden Knights defeat the Utah Mammoth in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and is on to the second round for just the third time in his career.
Marner, who scored twice in Friday evening’s Game 6 victory for Vegas to clinch the series and set up a date against the Anaheim Ducks , shared his immediate reaction to the victory at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
“I think this is what I hoped for sure, an opportunity to do something special,” Marner said via NHL.com. “Like I said when I first got here, I knew it was a special group. All four lines contributed throughout the series. There’s different moments that we need every line to step up and come in big, and every line did that. So, this is what I hoped for. There’s a lot more work to keep doing.”
During the regular season, Marner tallied 24 goals while adding 56 assists for 80 points in 81 games played, scoring at just barely below a point-per-game pace. He’s under contract through 2033, and his deal carries a salary cap hit of $12 million. So far, it’s paid off for both parties.
Marner and the Golden Knights now prepare to face the Ducks, who eliminated Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in six games in their respective series.
