Tidiam Gomis has emerged as one of the early positive stories of RB Leipzig's season, and his rapid rise has now earned him recognition at the international level. The 20-year-old's progress has been briefly interrupted, however, after he left France's U21 camp as a precaution because of minor lower-leg discomfort.
Gomis suffered a light blow to his lower leg during Die Roten Bullen's recent Bundesliga meeting with Bayer Leverkusen . The French federation and the German side's medical staff subsequently agreed that he should return to the club early rather than risk aggravating the issue during the international break.
The decision comes at a particularly frustrating moment for Gomis, who had finally begun to establish himself as a meaningful part of Martín Demichelis ' plans.
His 2025/26 campaign was largely spent on the fringes of the first team. Gomis made 18 Bundesliga appearances but accumulated only 347 minutes, with just two starts. His only league goal contribution came in a win over Union Berlin in December.
This season has been a completely different story.
Gomis has already recorded one goal and two assists in four Bundesliga appearances, with 229 minutes on the pitch. Only Antonio Nusa had produced more goal contributions among Leipzig players at the time of that analysis.
His opening-day performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach immediately showed why Demichelis was prepared to give him a larger role. Gomis started and provided two assists in the 3-0 victory, making an immediate impact after an impressive pre-season.
Demichelis has also highlighted the versatility that makes Gomis particularly useful. The Leipzig coach has used him across the attack, noting that he can operate on either wing or through the middle. That flexibility has become increasingly valuable given the competition and changes within Leipzig's attacking group.
Gomis then continued to make his case against Hamburger SV .
He started the 5-0 demolition of HSV and opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing from close range after a move involving Brajan Gruda and Ezechiel Banzuzi .
The goal was another sign that his contribution is no longer limited to creating opportunities for others. Gomis is beginning to add end product of his own, while his ability to cover several attacking positions gives Demichelis another option when managing a squad packed with competition for places.
That progress has not gone unnoticed in France.
Gomis received his first France U21 call-up this month, having previously been involved with the extended France setup in 2025.
For Leipzig , the priority now is simply to make sure the latest issue does not develop into something more serious. The decision to remove Gomis from international duty early was explicitly precautionary, with both the French federation and the club's medical department agreeing that there was no reason to take unnecessary risks.
The timing is unfortunate, but the bigger picture remains encouraging. In just a few months, Gomis has gone from a player struggling for minutes to one of Leipzig's most productive attacking options.
His next challenge will be to turn this fast start into a sustained breakthrough once he returns to full fitness.
