- Guardians Exec Calls Daniel Espino’s Rookie a ‘Success'
One year ago, Daniel Espino was taking the mound in the outfield in the desert as part of the MLB Arizona Fall League. He was there simply to get reps in after missing several years following a pair of
No one could have imagined or expected that just 365 days later, Espino would play a crucial role in the Cleveland Guardians ' American League Central title and come just two games short of reaching the World Series.

Yet, that's exactly what transpired from the end of September and into October this year.
This production recently prompted President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti to call Espino's 2026 season a success when asked about the rookie pitcher.
The Guardians executives are correct, and for more than one reason.
"This was an incredibly successful season for Daniel," said the executive.
On top of that, Antonetti noted that Espino said his primary goal was to help the team win a World Series in 2026, and, all things considered, he did his part to make that come true.
"It was funny in our spring training meeting, Daniel said, the only thing I want to do is find a way to contribute to help us winning a World Series. And that's who Daniel Espino is, and, you know, he did a really good job of contributing towards that goal."

First, Espino was as advertised on a big-league mound. The fastball was elite, and strikeouts followed. The rookie appeared in 14 regular-season games and logged a strikeout rate of 38.5 percent and an average fastball velocity in the 97th percentile.

That doesn't even include what Espino did for the Guardians in the postseason.
Cleveland trusted the 25-year-old to take the ball as an opener in both the ALDS and ALCS, and manager Stephen Vogt lined him up to take on Tampa Bay's top hitters, Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz, in the Championship Series. Espino's final playoff ERA was 3.60 (2ER/5.0IP) with a 1.60 WHIP.
In terms of the numbers, the Guardians couldn't have asked for more of Espino in 2026.
Zooming out even further, Espino accomplished something he hasn't been able to do since 2020: pitching a full season. Simply watching a healthy Espino take the mound at the big-league level was worth celebrating in its own right, considering all of the adversity he's had to overcome.

Who knows what the future holds for Espino?
Perhaps he'll be healthy and strong enough at one point in his career to get back to being a starting pitcher. Maybe the bullpen is the best spot for the hard-throwing right-hander moving forward.
Either way, considering the circumstances that came into the season, what Espino was forced to overcome both on and off the field, and how efficient he was when actually facing big-league caliber pitching, there's no question that Espino's rookie season was a success.
