The Cleveland Guardians are reportedly acquiring catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants , Jeff Passan of ESPN reports.
"BREAKING: The Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year's draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, sources tell ESPN," Passan reports.
The Guardians have had an up and down season , but they do lead the American League Central division. Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges are the catchers on the roster at the moment. It will be interesting to see what Cleveland ends up doing after acquiring Bailey.
Hedges is a backup catcher who is known for his defensive prowess, while Naylor has offensive potential but he has struggled at the plate in 2026.
Bailey, meanwhile, is a 26-year-old catcher who has struggled across 30 games played this season. He is hitting .146/.213/.183 in 89 plate appearances. Nevertheless, he has displayed potential in the past. At the very least he will provide Cleveland with more catching depth.
The Guardians are 21-19 at the moment and they lead the AL Central as mentioned. They would like to find more overall consistency, however. Cleveland has yet to play its best baseball in 2026.
Bailey will attempt to give them a boost. A fresh start may be exactly what he needs.
The Guardians will host the Minnesota Twins on Saturday after defeating them 6-4 on Friday night. First pitch for Saturday night's game is scheduled for 6:10 PM EST in Cleveland.
