The Cleveland Guardians earned a nice 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, giving the club a 33-25 record on the season. With the team going 7-3 in its last 10 games, all eyes are on Travis Bazzana right now, as he's making a serious case for AL Rookie of the Year with his efforts.
Reports indicate that since being moved to the leadoff spot, the Australian native has recorded an extra-base hit in each contest, according to MLB Stats. During this five-game stretch, Bazzana owns a .412 batting average and 1.298 OPS.
At just 23 years old, Bazzana is playing as one of the most consistent options for the Guardians this season. The leadoff spot seems to be the perfect spot for him, as his numbers are astronomical in his last five games. His two hits in four at-bats on Wednesday against the Nationals jumped his batting average to .302 on the season.
Those are the types of numbers worthy of at least contending for the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Especially if Travis Bazzana can maintain a batting average above .300. However, the Guardians rookie has stiff competition in the American League this year, as guys like Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers ' infielder Kevin McGonigle are making a strong case themselves.
Bazzana initially joined the organization as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, becoming the first Australian-born player to be selected first overall in league history. He was also one of the best collegiate players during his two-year stint with the Oregon State Beavers, and represented Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic in 2026.
