- What Happened to Ricky Pearsall? A Look at the 49ers WR’s Devastating Injury and Why He’s Sidelined Week 1

Ricky Pearsall has already endured an unusually difficult start to his NFL career, dealing with setbacks that have limited his opportunities to establish himself as a consistent contributor.
While the 2026 season was expected to present another chance for Pearsall to take a major step forward, his situation has once again become a major talking point surrounding the 49ers .
Pearsall's 2026 season came to a premature end before he even had the opportunity to take the field. He underwent surgery on his troublesome knee and is expected to miss the entire upcoming campaign.
Pearsall now faces a lengthy recovery process of roughly nine months as he works his way back to NFL action. If his recovery goes as expected, the 49ers believe they will have him ready for the start of the 2027 season.
Pearsall originally suffered the knee injury during the 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. The Week 4 injury proved to be a big one, forcing him to miss all or parts of 10 games and raising questions throughout the offseason about whether surgery would ultimately be necessary.
Following extensive discussions between Pearsall and the 49ers, both sides initially decided against surgery. The hope was that rest, rehabilitation, and additional treatment would allow the wide receiver to strengthen the knee and return to full health without undergoing a procedure.

However, that approach did not produce the desired results, as Pearsall experienced swelling in the same knee after participating in only three training camp practices, prompting the 49ers to reassess the situation. The team eventually placed him on season-ending injured reserve before he could begin his 2026 campaign.
"He's gutted," general manager John Lynch said in a press conference on Aug. 1. "We're gutted. (He's a) really good football player, really important member of our team, and an impactful player. We know he's got a bright future."

The latest setback is particularly frustrating for Pearsall, who already missed several games last season because of the knee problem and spent much of the offseason working toward a full recovery. He entered training camp with renewed optimism and appeared to have a strong opportunity to take another step forward in his NFL career.
Instead, the recurring knee issue has once again interrupted Pearsall's development, while his NFL journey has already included several significant obstacles.
He was shot in the chest during an attempted armed robbery near San Francisco 's Union Square in 2024. The incident delayed the start of his rookie season until mid-October.
Through his first 20 NFL games, Pearsall has recorded 67 receptions for 928 yards and three touchdowns. He finished last season with a 71.6 PFN WR Impact grade , ranking No. 55 in the league.
