The UConn Huskies picked up a victory to kick off their new season against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Monday, and it marked a historic occasion for UConn head coach Dan Hurley.
This was Hurley's 200th win as UConn coach, and he spoke about the achievement after the game.
"I think you know, number one, it's hard to get the coaching job at UConn," he said to reporters after the game.
He further spoke about how long he could go on, suggesting that while 300 wins is achievable, 400 seems like a long shot:
"It's hard to put yourself in position to be offered the job at a press conference, accepting the job, being announced as a coach; it's hard enough just to do that, and it's hard to keep the job that long to win 200 … at a place, just at a place like this with Coach Jim Calhoun and Geno (Auriemma) and you know Kevin Ollie as a national championship coach. I feel like I got a good shot at 300. I'm not sure about 400. I'm gonna be cooked by then."
Dan Hurley Wasn't Fully Satisfied With The Win
Despite what looked like a comfortable victory, Hurley made it clear there were still some things that were immature about the win.
"I thought we flew around, but I thought we were a little immature, and it was a little frustrating," Hurley further said to the media, per The Bristol Press . "We missed multiple dunks; we're taking points off the board; obviously the free-throw shooting is a joke."
Hurley also pointed out some things he particularly liked about the performance.
"I think the best thing about this team, though, is going to be the balance," he commented. "You come out of this, and we're just figuring out what the rotation is going to be. You're still playing with the rotation in this game a little bit. I did not sub this game the way I'm going to sub the Michigan game. I can promise you that. We're still kind of giving people a look, and now whoever's earned that top eight, top nine potential, those will be the people that play in Boston."
UConn's next clash is against Michigan on Friday.
