The Atlanta Hawks should aggressively pursue Domantas Sabonis before the trade deadline. ESPN's Tim McMahon reports that the Sacramento Kings are willing to move their star big man. Sabonis wants out of Sacramento. This is the exact moment Atlanta needs to act. The team has major holes in the frontcourt right now. They need a true playmaker who can control the glass.
Jalen Johnson, Jock Landale, and Mouhamed Gueye are all dealing with injuries . The team just beat the Indiana Pacers on Monday night, but the win was messy. They won 108-104 against a depleted Pacers squad . Even with that victory, the lack of depth is a clear problem. Sabonis brings the size and skill set Atlanta desperately lacks. He is not just a rebounder; he is a facilitator who can run the offense.
The stats show why this move makes sense . Sabonis is averaging 15.0 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game. No other center in the league does what he does with the ball in his hands. Soaring Down South notes that his passing could be an even bigger asset than his rebounding. He excels at high-post playmaking and handoffs. Pairing him with Jalen Johnson would give Quin Snyder two elite facilitators in the frontcourt. That creates a nightmare for opposing defenses.
The Hawks have struggled to secure defensive rebounds all season. Sabonis changes that dynamic immediately. He limits second-chance points for opponents. The Kings would consider moving him, according to reports. There is no word yet that Atlanta has shown interest, but the opportunity is there. The team cannot sit on the sidelines while a top-tier talent becomes available.
Money is the biggest hurdle for this deal. Sabonis is earning approximately $45.5 million this season. He is owed another $48.6 million in the 2027-28 season. That is a significant contract for a team that needs financial flexibility. President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh must decide if Sabonis is a long-term difference-maker. The Hawks might need to sacrifice future flexibility to get him now.
Atlanta would also need to build a realistic trade package. This likely means sending out substantial salary and adding more assets. Sacramento's willingness to talk does not mean they will accept any offer. However, the potential reward outweighs the financial risk. The team needs a cornerstone player who can elevate the entire roster. Sabonis fits that description perfectly.
The current situation with Onyeka Okongwu highlights the need for help. Okongwu remains under contract through 2027-28, but his recent performance was mixed. At the game's conclusion against Indiana, he sank a crucial basket to give the Hawks a four-point lead. He finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sports Illustrated noted that he was the only player on both squads to record double-digit rebounds. Yet the report also described his performance as lackluster for most of the night.
Okongwu got better as the game went along, but the offense still struggled without a true floor general in the paint. The bench also had a rough night. Aaron Wiggins scored seven points on 3-for-12 shooting.
