Udonis Haslem believes Giannis Antetokounmpo has the mindset Miami has valued for years. The former Heat captain sees similarities between the new superstar and the players who helped define the franchise's identity.
In a clip shared by the Hoop There It Is
podcast, Haslem explained why Antetokounmpo reminds him of Miami's greats
. "If Heat Culture could've had a baby, it would've been Giannis," Haslem said.

Haslem spent all 20 of his NBA seasons with Miami, winning three championships and serving as team captain for the final 16. Now the Heat's vice president of basketball development, he compared Antetokounmpo's mindset to his own, Alonzo Mourning's, and the franchise legends who came before them.
Describing the two-time MVP, Haslem called him "all business," "ultra focused" and "determined." He also praised Antetokounmpo's commitment to accountability and having the right conversations with the right people at the right times. Haslem said the forward has made a positive impact in the locker room, as a leader, and in his connection with Bam Adebayo.

Antetokounmpo has also praised Haslem. Speaking about the veteran's influence, he said, "He's great, he's honest, he's tough. Obviously being around the organization for 20-plus years, he brings value to the team as a player and as a guy that can come in and coach us and give us advice. So far, I've loved it."

Haslem's involvement has gone beyond his executive title. During Miami's training camp at Florida Atlantic University, he worked with the team's big men, including Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, and took part in post-practice drills.
Why the Fit Matters for Miami
Haslem's comments carry weight because his career has been closely tied to the standards the Heat expect from their players. His influence has continued after retirement, with the organization retaining him to mentor players and work alongside the coaching staff.
Antetokounmpo has expressed strong enthusiasm for his new surroundings. In an interview with The Athletic, he said "Heat Culture" is real and highlighted the team's togetherness, communication, seriousness, hard work and accountability. He also recalled a team meeting with two Navy SEALs, during which the players did push-ups while listening to their stories.

The bigger question is whether that shared mindset will translate into an effective offense. The NBA's 2026–27 season preview highlighted the defensive potential of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo together. Miami will need to work out how best to combine their skills. Both do much of their work near the basket, making spacing and half-court execution important questions for coach Erik Spoelstra.
Haslem's praise does not resolve Miami's offensive questions, but it highlights why the Heat believe Antetokounmpo belongs in their environment. His mindset may already align with the franchise's standards; finding the right balance between his game and Adebayo's will be the bigger test.
Miami opens its regular season at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 21, giving Erik Spoelstra and his reworked roster their first regular-season test of how the new pieces fit together.
