- Here's why UConn was the tournament's No. 1 overall seed over UCLA
It's not too much of a shock that the reigning national champions, who are also a perfect 34-0 this season, are the No. 1 overall seed in the women's NCAA tournament but the UConn Huskies narrowly beat out the UCLA Bruins for the tournament's top seed.
Both the Bruins and the Huskies earned No. 1 seeds and could meet in the national championship game. UCLA got some reasoning on why UConn was named as the tournament's top seed on Sunday by the chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, Amanda Braun.

"The debate was pretty close the whole time. Just two terrific teams that won a whole lot of games. We took a committee vote and watched a lot of UConn and a lot of UCLA as a group. The vote ultimately gave the edge to UConn," Braun told ESPN. "I would say observable component was talked about a whole lot. The way we watched UConn win throughout the year from beginning to the end."
UCLA had more wins against elite competition, picking up 19 Quad 1 wins, while UConn had just nine. While last year is last year, there's a lasting image from UConn's blowout win over UCLA in last year's Final Four that surely lingered in the mind of the committee.
UCLA has one loss this season, a November neutral site game against the Texas Longhorns , whom UCLA might see in the Final Four. If both No. 1 seeds win out, the Longhorns and Bruins will meet for a berth to the national championship game.
Before UCLA worries about the Final Four, they'll have to deal with No. 16 seed California Baptist on Saturday night.
