The Carolina Hurricanes finally got their first win of the season, but it came after a true scare in Philadelphia. They beat the Flyers 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena. It was a rough start for the visitors, but they showed the grit needed to get the job done.
A Fast Start And A Slow Finish
Carolina did not waste any time to take the lead. Sebastian Aho scored just 10 seconds into the game, assisted by William Carrier and Andrei Svechnikov. The Hurricanes secured their initial lead and opening period goal of the season with that strike. The Flyers answered back when Owen Tippett tied the game at 8:03 in the first period. Matvei Michkov then put Philadelphia ahead 2-1 in the second period after a defensive breakdown by the Canes.

The momentum shifted again in the third. Aho tied the game on a power play at 4:59, firing a shot from the bumper. This marked his second point of the night and tied the score at 2-2. The game went to overtime where Shayne Gostisbehere, a former Flyer, scored the winning goal on a power play at 2:51. This victory gave the defending Stanley Cup champions their first win of the year.
Woll Keeps The Flyers In It
Joseph Woll was the reason the Flyers stayed close in this tight contest. He made 37 saves on 40 shots to keep the game alive until the final minutes. According to 97.3 ESPN, Woll was outstanding in goal again but came up just short on the overtime power play. Despite conceding a goal inside the first 10 seconds, he managed a high shot count and dominated play for his squad.
The Flyers were outshot by a wide margin, losing the shot battle 40-18. They also struggled on the power play, going 0-for-4 on the night. Rick Tocchet admitted the team needs to improve quickly. "Our execution is not good this year," Tocchet said after the loss. He noted that the team had six, seven, or eight practices but still made mistakes. The coach said, "We had the look we wanted and we just missed" regarding their overtime chance.

The Road Ahead Is Tough
Following a crushing defeat to the Washington Capitals the previous day, this victory marked a significant advance for the Hurricanes. According to Sportsnaut , the duo of points arrived during a far better performance versus the Flyers. The team survived a rough position in overtime when they were shorthanded before the extra frame even started. Jordan Staal, Jaccob Slavin, and Jalen Chatfield pushed through the penalty before Gostisbehere returned to the ice.
The Flyers now have two straight overtime losses and are off to their slowest start since the 2015-16 season. They have yet to score a power-play goal this season. The Hurricanes, however, are back on track with a win against a tough opponent. As per the Trentonian , the team will face a challenging five-game stretch that includes the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins. This overtime win proves the Hurricanes can grind out a result even when things do not go their way.
