Illinois has shown glimpses of potential greatness over the last two years, but can it get through the tough parts of the 2026 schedule to do something special?
Last year it rolled Duke, beat USC, and beat Tennessee in the Music City - and it got obliterated by Indiana and lost to Wisconsin. This year, there aren't that many brutal dates, but there are plenty of landmines to worry about.

The Good
Forgetting the Ohio State game in late September on the road, Illinois gets four of the first five games in Champaign before a winnable date at Michigan State. Four of the last six games are in Illinois, and then there's the biggest plus ...
After Ohio State, three road games are against teams that didn't go bowling last year, with the last one against Northwestern.
The Bad
At Ohio State. Considering that's an almost certain loss, there's all the pressure in the world on the teams' shoulders to get by Oregon, Nebraska, and Iowa at home.
There can't be a misfire anywhere if Illinois wants to get to ten wins and a possible CFP spot.
What Big Ten Teams Illinois Will Miss
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, Rutgers, USC, Washington, Wisconsin.
You'd like to play Rutgers, but Illinois will be more than ecstatic to miss Indiana, Michigan, Penn State, USC, and the teams not on the Big Ten schedule.
Illinois's Best and Worst Case Scenarios in 2026
Best Case: No one beats Illinois in Champaign
Again, with the road game to face Ohio State a more than likely loss, Illinois has to win all seven home games, and it does.
It'll be the favorite against everyone at home except Oregon and, maybe, Iowa. But it uses the week off to rest up and be ready for the Ducks, and shows up large for the home finale against the Hawkeyes.
There aren't any problems against Northwestern, and there isn't a miss at Michigan State, Maryland, or UCLA. Or ...
Worst Case: The Illini gets dunked by Duke
The Blue Devils get revenge for the 45-19 loss of last year, and then the pressure is on.
The Illini get rolled by the Buckeyes, and struggle in a tough loss to Michigan State, followed up by a loss to Oregon - all the big homes and dreams are gone before Halloween.
November becomes more of a grind than hoped for, and the Illini need to beat Northwestern just to get bowling.

Games That Will Decide the Illinois Season
1. Oregon, Oct. 24
It's a home game, it's coming after a week off, and unlike last year when the Illini were obliterated by a national championship-level team - Indiana - this time around, they might have the stuff to pull off a program-changing win.
2. Iowa, Nov. 21
It's the final home game of the season, and it's coming after a long trip to UCLA. Win this, and the pressure will likely be taken off a bit before closing at Northwestern.
3. at Michigan State, Oct. 10
Assuming a loss at Ohio State to start the Big Ten season, and assuming a win against Purdue to follow, coming up with a win in East Lansing is a must, with Oregon coming up next.
