The Philadelphia 76ers are no longer living on potential. They are cashing it in. One-time NBA champion Iman Shumpert believes the rest of the league should be paying close attention. After Philadelphia 's stunning 3-1 first-round series comeback against the Boston Celtics , Shumpert pointed to Joel Embiid as the reason the Sixers have transformed from a "what if" contender into a legitimate postseason threat.

"They are one of those scary teams that we once believed, and now they're right here in front of our faces," Shumpert said. He captured the shift in perception after a series that tested both talent and resolve.
Philadelphia's climb from the brink was emphatic. It was capped by a 109-100 Game 7 win at TD Garden where Embiid dominated with 34 points and 12 rebounds. With Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe feeding off his gravity, the Sixers dismantled Boston's defensive structure. They erased lingering doubts about their postseason toughness. For Shumpert, that mental breakthrough is what makes this version of the Sixers different and dangerous.
The transformation starts and ends with Embiid. Throughout the 2026 playoffs, he has anchored both ends of the floor with authority. The big man has combined elite scoring with rim protection and playmaking under pressure. His Game 7 performance was dominant and definitive.

More importantly, Embiid has remained healthy through high-stakes minutes. This has allowed Philadelphia to fully realize its ceiling. That presence forces opponents to rethink everything, from defensive schemes to pacing. Now heading into a second-round clash with the New York Knicks , the Sixers carry more than momentum. They carry proof. If Shump is right, that might be what makes them the most feared team left in the East.
