FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox non-roster invitee Brendan Rodgers will undergo an MRI on his sore right shoulder Thursday.
“He’s pretty sore today,” manager Alex Cora said at JetBlue Park on Thursday. “We don’t know what’s going on, so we’ll have more in the upcoming days.”
The 29-year-old infielder, who appeared in 495 games for the Rockies and Astros from 2019-25, is competing for an Opening Day roster spot.
Rodgers injured his shoulder Wednesday in a Grapefruit League game against the Twins. He dived for a ball at second base, landed on his left shoulder, then reached for the ball and came down on his right shoulder. Rodgers was initially optimistic based on the results of a strength test after he was removed from the game.
Rodgers has batted .295 with a .356 on-base percentage, .481 slugging percentage and .837 OPS in 568 major league career plate appearances against left-handed pitchers.
He has started 426 games at second base and 23 games at shortstop in the majors.
Rodgers has had labrum surgery on both shoulders. He had his right shoulder repaired in 2019 and his left shoulder repaired in 2023.
There are several players, including Nate Eaton and Andruw Monasterio , competing for one of the final Opening Day roster spots, especially with Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) not expected to be ready for the start of the season .
