With the San Francisco Giants being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays , it is a microcosm of how the team has been immensely disappointing when it comes to the 2026 season. As the Giants look to turn around their embarrassing stretch , this MLB insider speaks about how Rafael Devers has highlighted the issues.
Speaking on "Foul Territory," Ken Rosenthal would look at the struggling Giants from top to bottom, but looked at how Devers has been down, currently recording a .214 batting average to go along with two home runs and 12 RBIs. As San Francisco is 13-21, last in the NL West, Rosenthal sees the way out for this team being that Devers, on his big contract, "starts going nuts."
"An infield that includes the struggling Raphael Devers, the struggling Willy Adames . Those are the two guys with the most expensive contracts in San Francisco Giants history…This is a team that, with the new manager, Tony Vitello, has been an extreme disappointment to this point of the season," Rosenthal said.
"I don't see a way out for this club unless Devers starts going nuts, and he looks like the guy he looked like at times with the Red Sox , when he was overmatched by fastballs. He needs to get going," Rosenthal continued.
Ken Rosenthal on how the Giants have been an "absolute mess"
Rosenthal wouldn't hold back on how the Giants are currently playing, saying how they are "an absolute mess," as the team is on a six-game losing streak. San Francisco was outscored 26-9 on the six-game road trip, showing why they need someone like Devers to kickstart this offense.
"They were shut out three times, were walked off three times, they are a team that has a walk rate of 5.6 percent, lowest in the majors, historically low in fact. They are a team also, not only do they not walk, they don't hit home runs, they don't really do much of anything. They're last in the majors with 19 homers," Rosenthal said.
The Giants start a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Monday in the hope of turning around the season.
