Oklahoma City Thunder fans got great news when it comes to retaining one of their core players in big man Isaiah Hartenstein this offseason.
Hartenstein completed the eighth season of his NBA career, his second with the Thunder. He played a key role in helping the franchise win their first-ever NBA championship in 2025 after beating the Indiana Pacers in seven games.
Hartenstein is a free agent as the Thunder declined his team option. However, they went to the negotiating table and agreed to a new deal that will have the veteran big man stay for the long term, per NBA insider Shams Charania.
" Oklahoma City 's Isaiah Hartenstein intends to sign a new three-year contract to return to the Thunder through 2028-29 that brings his total earnings with the franchise at five years and $134 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN. A key signing in 2024 leading to the 2025 championship, Thunder lock in the defensive anchor," Charania wrote.
What lies ahead for Isaiah Hartenstein , Thunder this summer
For a Thunder squad that is retooling to make another run next season, keeping Isaiah Hartenstein was certainly crucial to those plans. And from the looks of it, the team will greatly benefit from the big man deciding to stick around for multiple seasons.
Hartenstein continues to shine as one of the more well-rounded big men in the league. Despite missing 35 games due to injury, Hartenstein remained productive with his on-court activity. He averaged 9.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and one steal per game throughout 47 regular-season appearances.
Oklahoma City finished with a 64-18 record this past season, securing the top seed in the Western Conference standings. They swept the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the first two rounds before falling in seven games to the San Antonio Spurs .
Contract situations surround the Thunder this summer besides Hartenstein. Jalen Williams ' big extension kicks in next season, while the team has to decide on Luguentz Dort 's team option for the 2026-27 campaign.
