We've talked ad nauseam about J.J. McCarthy 's comments after OTAs on Wednesday, but one element is the most important.
You've likely heard Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy when he was asked about his relationship with new quarterback Kyler Murray . It's been the biggest NFL talking point because of both it being a quarterback competition and there is nothing else to talk about.
The quote and the entire press conference have lit the NFL world by storm. McCarthy has always been a contentious figure among fans and analysts since the Vikings selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Minnesota Vikings selected McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, marking the first time they had taken a quarterback that high in franchise history.
During his first preseason game, McCarthy tore his meniscus and missed his entire rookie season.
In his first start, McCarthy won NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his come-from-behind win against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
Despite that early success, McCarthy played poorly throughout the course of the year, and missed seven games due to multiple injuries.
The quote from McCarthy is relatively innocuous. He was asked about the situation between him and Murray a whopping 12 times and the questions wouldn't end. One of the biggest reasons why the questions wouldn't end was due to how McCarthy handled them.
The biggest talking point about the entire discussion has been the attitude in which McCarthy handled it. He came across poorly and was widely criticized for being immature. There were concerns about McCarthy's maturity last season, with the main one stemming from doing the Griddy into the endzone for a touchdown. Normally, that wouldn't be an issue, but both he and head coach Kevin O'Connell both admitted postgame that O'Connell asked McCarthy not to do that. Naturally, McCarthy had to do it.
Considering it was an issue last season with his maturity, this response raised red flags with many in the industry and fanbase. The Athletic's Alec Lewis mentioned in a recent mailbag consistency was an issue, mainly his discipline.
Then there's the consistency piece: how McCarthy shows up to work every day and how his habits progress in his third season. The Vikings have a high standard at the position. They want the starting quarterback to lift the tide for the entire team in 2026. This requires a level of discipline, which was up and down last season for McCarthy.
Overall, nothing is a huge deal with these comments, but in totality, they are somewhat concerning. However, the biggest one isn't with his reaction at all: it's the lack of preparation, and I talked about it on The Real Forno Show Thursday night.
Once Murray signed on the bottom line in March, McCarthy had over two months to prepare for this press scrum. He knew these questions were coming and had the ability to control the narrative and discussion. None of these questions should have been a surprise for McCarthy, yet he kept the door open and didn't shut the questions down enough, and it led to where we are at right now.
McCarthy is theoretically a starting quarterback in the NFL, meaning he knows how to deal with the press. Being the starting quarterback last season, he did dozens of individual press conferences. Instead of handling it well and controlling the discussion, McCarthy failed to do anything of the sort. That is the biggest concern here. Not the attitude or the words themselves, but not being prepared to answer the questions.
It should have been a nothing burger, and McCarthy handled it quickly. Instead, it turned into a big ordeal. Not handling this is a concern, especially with the other elements of concern that already existed.
