J.J. Spaun isn't just playing golf in England; he is making a case for the DP World Tour to become a regular stop for top Americans. His strong run at the BMW PGA Championship proves that playing abroad is not a punishment but a genuine opportunity. The 2025 U.S. Open champion arrived at Wentworth with a clear plan, and his performance suggests that other Americans should follow his lead.
Family First, Golf Second
Spaun's connection to this part of the world runs deeper than just a tournament invite. He and his family actually vacation in the Cotswolds every winter. "My family and I actually vacation over here in the wintertime," Spaun said after the second round. This routine gives him a reason to visit beyond the fairways. Whenever a reason arises to visit the U.K., particularly England, he tries to make it happen. That personal stake changes how he approaches the event. He's a regular guest, not just a visitor.

The trips happen in mid-December, a time when most players are resting. During mid-December, they spend a couple weeks in the Cotswolds simply enjoying the English culture. It's a simple life away from the pressure. This balance is what many players crave but rarely find on the main tour.
A Blueprint for the Future
Spaun's experience at Wentworth has solidified his plans for the coming season. He isn't looking to leave the PGA Tour entirely, but he sees a new rhythm emerging. "I definitely feel like I'm going to plan a little bit more of a global schedule or a European schedule moving forward in the fall time," Spaun stated. This is a direct message to his peers. If a major champion can thrive here, why not others?
According to Yahoo Sports , these comments arrive at a critical moment for the DP World Tour. The league faces a massive shift as LIV Golf files for bankruptcy, potentially forcing a wave of players to seek new options. Because Spaun is an American with little historical participation on the European circuit, his endorsement carries substantial weight. His victory at the BMW PGA Championship, where he closed at 17 under par, demonstrates the path is open.

The timing is perfect for players like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who are already members and will likely serve suspensions on this tour. But for Americans, the hesitation remains. Spaun's voice cuts through that doubt. He has tested the waters and found them warm. "The community is great, the spectators and fans are great," he said. That's a strategic shift in how the game is played, not just polite talk.
The Road Ahead
Spaun's journey also highlights a personal hurdle he overcame to get here. He finished 10th on the points list for the Presidents Cup but was left off the American roster. "Yeah, I think it was disappointing to be left off," he admitted. That sting likely fueled his drive at Wentworth. He is using this platform to show that the global game is where the future lies. With the DP World Tour looking for new blood and Spaun proving the waters are warm, the door is wide open for more Americans to follow suit this fall.
