Three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt surely had many CBS viewers nodding along in agreement during the fourth quarter of Sunday's AFC West clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos at Mile High.
Leading 24-13, Kansas City had third-and-6 at its own 36-yard line when quarterback Patrick Mahomes found running back Emmett Johnson with a pass behind the line of scrimmage. Johnson's catch-and-run got the ball close to the first-down marker, but a flag was thrown.
As the officiating crew — led by referee Clete Blakeman — gathered to talk about the flag, Watt voiced his displeasure with how slow the crew was to announce the ruling, and how slow they were with such decisions all game.
"These guys have been taking their time all day with these calls. I'm just gonna say it," Watt said bluntly. "Like, let's go. We gotta get the calls. I want to get it right. I absolutely want to. But, I mean, this is a long time."
"Ineligible downfield on the offense, number 77," Watt explained before the call was announced.
"Yeah, we saw that signal 30 seconds ago," CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz added in agreement about the officials taking too long.
Officiating is always a big topic in the football world, and especially this season at the college football and NFL levels. Watt, who's in his first year in the CBS A-team booth alongside Nantz as the Tony Romo color commentator replacement, will see his supporters grow if he continues to deliver honest commentary about officiating.
