J.J. Watt is a fairly recognizable guy at any NFL stadium, but rules are rules.
The CBS NFL analyst was on the call Sunday for the big AFC West showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Since the game didn't get underway until 4:25 p.m. ET, Watt decided to take a morning walk beforehand. As fate would have it, his walk led him toward Empower Field at Mile High, and he decided to work it into his workout. While the 6'5″, 280-pound former NFL player didn't have his credentials on him, one would have assumed that he'd have been recognized on site and allowed inside.
But you would have assumed wrong.
"I do a morning walk," Watt told Kyle Long on NFL Today+ before the game. "I was up early, daylight savings in the West Coast, so I did a walk at 6 a.m., and I started walking, and way off in the distance I saw the stadium, and I was like, it's a beautiful day, let's walk over there.
"So I walk over to the stadium, and I get there, and I don't have a credential cause I wasn't planning on walking to the stadium. And they're like, 'Go through security.' So I do the face recognition, which it lights up green, says J.J. Watt, welcome to the stadium. So I'm like, all right.
"I start to walk in, and they go, 'Sorry, sorry, you can't come in.' And I said, why not? And they said, 'You don't have a credential.' And I said, I just scanned my face, it said I'm in. And they said, 'I'm sorry, we can't.' So an employee walks over and goes, I'll escort him onto the field, and they're like, 'No, if he doesn't have a credential, he can't get in.'
"So, respect to the Broncos security staff, but I couldn't get into the stadium this morning, so I still haven't been on the field yet."
"I'll tell you what, that's got to be the only person in the history of the universe to be able to successfully block J.J. Watt," added Long. "So well done to the stadium security."
Hey, that's a credit to the security team at Mile High. They don't mess around. Still, those employees' staunch defense made for some easy jokes once Watt's story spread on social media.
"Broncos security has a better pass-block grade than half the tackles in this league," said one X user .
"Broncos security just did what no offensive lineman could do for a decade," added another . "Somebody check if that guard is on waivers, because my fantasy team could use a blocker that reliable."
"Give that security guard a max contract immediately," another person replied .
