Jacob Ramsey has issued an apology to Newcastle United supporters following his late dismissal during Monday night's disappointing 1-0 Premier League defeat against Everton at St James' Park.
The midfielder's evening ended in frustrating circumstances as Newcastle suffered another damaging defeat, with Ramsey receiving two yellow cards in the closing stages before being sent off in stoppage time.
Having entered the match as a substitute, Ramsey was unable to help Matthias Jaissle's side find a way back into the contest and instead became the centre of attention following a needless dismissal that further compounded an already miserable night for the Magpies.
Newcastle had struggled throughout the evening against David Moyes' Everton , with Thierno Barry's 49th-minute strike proving decisive. The home supporters were left increasingly frustrated by another uninspiring performance, and the final whistle was greeted by boos from sections of the St James' Park crowd.
Ramsey's dismissal only added to the disappointment.
The former Aston Villa midfielder was initially booked for a foul in the sixth minute of stoppage time before receiving a second yellow card just 86 seconds later, resulting in his dismissal in the 98th minute.
It was an incredibly frustrating conclusion for a player who would undoubtedly have wanted to make a positive impact after coming off the bench.
By issuing an apology, Ramsey has acknowledged the disappointment surrounding his sending-off and the frustration it caused supporters who had already endured another difficult evening.
The midfielder will know that Newcastle supporters expect commitment, discipline and responsibility from every player wearing the black and white shirt, particularly during a period when performances and results have fallen well below expectations.
Another difficult evening for Newcastle
Ramsey's red card was arguably a reflection of the wider frustration currently surrounding Newcastle.
The Magpies have now suffered consecutive defeats against Everton, having also been beaten 3-1 in the Carabao Cup fourth round just four days earlier.
Monday's Premier League encounter offered an opportunity to respond, but Newcastle once again struggled to produce the attacking football supporters have come to expect.
Despite enjoying periods of possession, Jaissle's side lacked creativity and struggled to seriously trouble Jordan Pickford. Their first shot on target did not arrive until the 85th minute, highlighting the scale of their attacking problems.
Anthony Elanga came closest to finding an equaliser when his effort struck the post in the second half, while substitute Yoane Wissa also tested Pickford late on.
However, Everton remained relatively comfortable defensively and held on to secure three important points.
Ramsey must respond positively
While Ramsey's apology will hopefully help address the immediate disappointment surrounding his dismissal, the midfielder must now ensure that his response comes on the pitch.
Discipline is an important part of football, and Newcastle cannot afford to make difficult situations even worse through avoidable individual mistakes.
With confidence already appearing fragile throughout the squad, Jaissle needs his players to demonstrate greater composure and leadership as Newcastle attempt to turn their season around.
The Magpies currently find themselves 13th in the Premier League table following another damaging result, with pressure continuing to grow on the manager and his squad.
For Ramsey, the priority will be learning from the incident, accepting responsibility and returning determined to make a positive contribution.
Newcastle supporters will appreciate players who acknowledge their mistakes, but ultimately, performances and results are what matter most.
After a difficult night at St James' Park, Ramsey will be hoping his apology is the first step towards putting the incident behind him and helping Newcastle get their season back on track.
