With Trevor Lawrence and Ewers on the 53-man roster, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still choosing to elevate quarterback Nick Mullens for Sunday's Week 1 matchup with the Cleveland Browns .
After the Jaguars traded for Ewers, Mullens was released on cutdown day and then signed back to the practice squad.
Why are the Jaguars elevating quarterback Nick Mullens ?
By trading for Ewers, the Jaguars are clearly bullish on the young quarterback's upside. That said, he is still a relatively inexperienced player, whereas Mullens not only has NFL experience but is well-versed in the Liam Coen system.
Beyond the backup quarterback needing to step in if an injury occurs, that player is also tasked with providing support and another set of eyes for the starter in the meeting rooms, on the practice field, and on the sidelines on Sundays.
Mullens' experience likely makes him more well-equipped to fill that role right now than Ewers.
"Nick's presence here, I mean, it means a ton," GM James Gladstone said after cutdowns. "His familiarity with the system, it's like having another coach in the room and certainly being able to understand that he can operate our offense in the way that it's intended to is something that we don't want to just separate from. And so that was a real conversation, an authentic conversation that we had to have with Nick and appreciate very much just the way that he went about it and the professionalism that he showcased. And he's such a great teammate, such a great partner in this. And he's pouring right back in, starting out on our practice squad, and we'll see how it all unfolds here as we get into the season."
This is the first of three practice squad elevations that Mullens has available to him this season.
