- Jameis Winston helped the Giants starter hours after his benching

Jameis Winston lost the Giants starting job, then spent part of the same day helping the quarterback who replaced him.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy described finding Winston and J.J. McCarthy reviewing third-down situations together after the decision, during an appearance with Peter Schrager. Nagy's account offers a more useful picture of the quarterback room than the usual assumption that a benching must divide it.
McCarthy arrived in a September trade and made his first New York start against Houston on October 25. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without an interception as the Giants won 27-21 in overtime.
Harbaugh noted that the offense avoided procedural penalties in that game despite the quarterback's limited time in the system. Winston knows the offense from starting four games while Jaxson Dart recovered from his knee injury; sharing that knowledge can help McCarthy handle the parts of a game that do not show up in a highlight.
The Giants do not need to turn Winston into a coach in uniform. They do need a backup prepared to play and a starter who can keep expanding his command of the offense. Those jobs overlap when the two quarterbacks can discuss protections, timing and the staff's third-down preferences.

McCarthy earned the next opportunity with his Houston performance, but his Giants sample remains small. Winston went 2-1-1 in his starts and remains an experienced alternative if circumstances change. Dart's recovery is a separate question, not a timetable the team has promised.
The most practical takeaway from Nagy's story is not that New York has eliminated quarterback uncertainty. It is that a difficult decision did not prevent the players from preparing together for the next game.
