- Janssen And Da Costa Power Timbers Into Playoffs With Dominant Win
Portland finally punched their ticket to the postseason on Sunday night. A 3-1 win against the Houston Dynamo secured a playoff berth for the Timbers, according to Yahoo Sports . Vincent Janssen and David Da Costa were the engines that drove this win. They showed what real teamwork looks like when the stakes get high. This wasn't just a game; it was a statement for the whole league.
The Numbers Behind the Win
The stats tell the story of a team that refused to quit. Janssen scored a goal and added two assists to lead the charge. David Da Costa matched that effort with one goal and one assist of his own. Portland (12-14-7) moved from 11th place in the Western Conference all the way up to eighth. They did this with just one match left in the regular season. That is a massive climb for a squad that was fighting just to stay alive.

Da Costa took a pass from Janssen in the 25th minute to score his career-high seventh goal. This marked his first assist in 13 MLS matches for Janssen, proving he can create chances when it counts. Kristoffer Velde added the second goal in the 65th minute, scoring his 11th time in his first full season. The Dynamo tried to cut the lead later when Agustín Bouzat scored, but the Timbers sealed it in the 78th minute. Janssen scored his fourth goal of the game on an assist from Da Costa off a corner kick. It was Janssen's career-high 10th assist.
Too many teams talk about "process" and "development" while they lose games. Portland just went out and got the job done. They beat three playoff-bound teams in a row: Charlotte FC, St. Louis City, and now the Dynamo. That kind of momentum is built on grit, not just fancy plays. The team improved to 9-4-4 at home, showing they are a force to be reckoned with on their own turf. Houston's five-match unbeaten run ended right there on the field.
The hard part is done, the regular season is not over. The Timbers now face Austin FC on Saturday for the regular-season finale. They need to hold their ground and finish strong. The top four spot and home-field advantage in the best-of-3 first round remain possible for Houston. The Dynamo will host St. Louis City to finish their regular season on Saturday. Every game counts from here on out. Portland has won three in a row and they look ready to keep rolling.
