Jason Varitek technically was not fired by the Boston Red Sox during the team's stunning coaching shakeup Saturday evening.
But he wasn't exactly spared either.
When announcing that they fired Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff, the Red Sox said they were re-assigning its storied former player from his role as game-planning coordinator and run prevention coach.
Varitek's wife, Catherine, appeared to post a farewell on X Sunday afternoon.
"Red Sox Nation, Thank you," Catherine Varitek wrote . "For the love, support, and loyalty you've shown my husband for the past 3 decades. Forever grateful."
Overnight, Cora posted a photo to his Instagram story with the fired members of his coaching staff and Jason Varitek standing outside of the private charter plane that took them from Baltimore back to Boston. Varitek is smiling in the photo but also giving a thumbs-down gesture.
When Boston's chief of baseball operations Craig Breslow was asked about Varitek's re-assignment, he gave a vague answer in response.
"We're still working through that and having conversations," Breslow said. "Tek is an incredibly meaningful and important and revered member in this organization who has a ton of respect from me, but I think those conversations are best handled in private."
Sources told MassLive's Chris Cotillo that Varitek did not take the news of the coaching changes well.
