Jayson Tatum admitted his second game back felt a lot more normal than his initial comeback night. There was so much anticipation for the C’s star to return from his Achilles injury with TD Garden buzzing pregame last Friday against the Mavericks.
But Tatum got to go through his routine ahead of the Celtics’ victory over the Cavaliers on Sunday. Tatum finished with 20 points, three rebounds and two assists, which included scoring 12 points in the first quarter. But there is one major area that’ll take some getting used to with Tatum making a blunt remark on it.
“The toughest part for me is just being on minute restriction,” Tatum told reporters in Cleveland . “That (expletive) sucks, quite frankly. But that’s the toughest part, playing shorter stints and sitting for a longer time than obviously I normally (would). But I understand the bigger picture.”
Tatum played 27 minutes Sunday in Cleveland, which followed up his 27-minute night against the Mavericks . But how those minutes came about was different in comparing the two games. With the C’s up big on Dallas , Tatum checked out early to conclude a successful comeback.
But facing the Cavs , the Celtics fended off a team trying to make a comeback. Tatum checked out of the third quarter with 6:40 remaining, then didn’t check back in until the 7:31 mark in the fourth quarter. Notably, Tatum closed out the game so there are no questions there. He’s still going to play in crucial moments. It’s just an adjustment considering he’s used to playing a heavy allotment of minutes on a nightly basis.
“I feel confident, and that was a big thing,” Tatum said. “Before I made a decision to come back, I wanted to feel confident. I know it’s not going to go exactly how I wanted to. I think for me is my conditioning. Am I trusting myself more each game to game? Conditioning, obviously.”
Tatum’s comeback isn’t going to be a linear line going forward. There will be some spurts where he looks like his All-Star self. That was the case in the first quarter, where he grabbed tough rebounds or completed a physical take to the bucket. Then he missed seven straight shots, which also isn’t any reason to panic.
The early returns have certainly been impressive — especially coming off a 10-month layoff. Tatum played Friday night then had a relatively quick turnaround with the 1 p.m. Sunday tip in Cleveland. The conditioning part will continue to improve, but there’s the mental aspect to playing at game speed again.
Regardless, it’ll take some time for the Celtics and Tatum. Fortunately, the C’s just keep winning in the meantime. Boston improved to 43-21 after Sunday’s victory, sweeping Cleveland in the season series. The Celtics also have 18 games left in the regular season to continue smoothing out any wrinkles from Tatum’s comeback.
“Everybody is just having a patience that it’s gonna take some time to build chemistry, to build a flow,” Jaylen Brown said. “It seems seamless for now, but that’s usually not how things go. Obviously we got JT. JT is a great player; smart, intelligent basketball. He can integrate, but it’s an adjustment phase, so I think we’re all gonna be learning.”
