The Los Angeles Lakers got some huge news on Tuesday when it was revealed that LeBron James will not be returning to the team in free agency. James spent the last eight years with the franchise, but Shams Charania of ESPN has reported that James informed the Lakers he will be taking his talents elsewhere this summer.
Now, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss has released a statement thanking James for his time with the franchise.
" LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers-including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family," read the statement, per the Lakers on X, formerly Twitter.
Reports had surfaced from Baxter Holmes of ESPN earlier this year that Buss was frustrated with James' increasing sway in the Lakers' organization during his time there, but clearly, the governor and daughter of late former team owner Jerry Buss did not have any resentment with her statement on Tuesday.
As Buss referenced, James broke numerous records as a member of the Lakers, including becoming the NBA's all-time leading scorer three years ago, as well as guiding the Lakers to the NBA title in the 2020 Bubble during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Now, the Lakers will pivot to fully rebuilding around Luka Doncic as James leaves town.
