The Los Angeles Chargers had another tough performance as they fell in Week 8 to the Los Angeles Rams 24-9, with quarterback Justin Herbert and the offense struggling once again to find much success in being able to move the ball consistently.
On that note, following Herbert's performance, Rams safety Quentin Lake had an interesting comment that he put out there on a recent episode of the St. Brown Podcast . "I mean, he was throwing deli meat out there. He's seeing ghosts. I don't know what's going on, but like, we knew we were going to get a couple. At least one," Lake said.
For Lake to come out and say something like this is very interesting, and while Lake may feel this way, head coach Jim Harbaugh does not feel the same way, as shown in his response to the comment from Lake when talking to the media .
"As far as anybody else's opinion, I don't see that. Everybody's entitled to their opinion. It's not what I see," Harbaugh stated. Harbaugh also added that he thought Herbert "did his job exceptionally well" against the Rams, but he did say there were "two throws he would have liked to have back."
Looking at this quote from Harbaugh, it is very clear that he supports Herbert as his quarterback, as every head coach should, and that he actually thought Herbert performed quite well aside from the two throws that he mentioned.
The hard part about Harbaugh's statement that Herbert played exceptionally well is that the offense overall did not perform up to standard on Sunday as they scored just nine points and were shut out in the second half. Now, things like the run game not working are not necessarily on Herbert, but as the quarterback he has to figure out a way to help this team get on track and put points on the board when the Chargers need them.
Focusing on Herbert, as far as his performance goes this season, he has had quite a rough start as he has thrown at least one interception in every game thus far and he actually leads the league in interceptions with 10 total which has been less than ideal for LA and is a big part of why this team has been unable to get into the win column.
All that to say, Herbert has to be better and needs to figure out how he can be more productive and take care of the ball in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's offense, otherwise there will be more problems moving forward.
With that said, Herbert also had a response to what Lake said about his performance. "I haven't looked into it. I haven't heard anything about it, so I can't make a comment about it," Herbert said.
Seeing how Herbert responded, it does seem pretty clear that he is focused on trying to get the offense to play better and perform closer to what their goal is, which is exactly what he should be focusing on.
Now, this could have simply been him shrugging off the question so as to not give it any more fuel, but regardless this is the approach that Herbert should have as the starting quarterback of a Chargers team that is struggling.
Ultimately, comments like this do really affect Herbert or the Chargers in the sense that this game is in the past, and it is up to them to move on and focus on their next opponent and try to get their first win, and for LA, that focus is set for this Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Herbert and the Chargers respond and if they can get their first win, because if they cannot, comments like this could become more common, and the idea that the Chargers have to become sellers ahead of the trade deadline will pick up even more steam than it already has.
