Jim Mora Sr. was an accomplished NFL coach with successful tenures at the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. But ask any football fan what they know or remember from his career and it was his epic, explosive press conferences and fiery personality that have produced soundbites that still reverberate to this day.
In New Orleans it was " diddly poo ." In Indianapolis it was " Playoffs?! "
Now at Colorado State, the Rams' performance against Utah State in Pac-12 action was enough to send Jim Mora Jr. to a similar place.
After most prominently coaching the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL, the younger Mora has spent the last 15 years in college football. That includes six years as head coach at UCLA, four years as head coach at UConn, and now his first season in Fort Collins.
After a 31-14 defeat against Utah State, the Rams were left at 3-5 on the 2026 season. But it led Mora to reaching his breaking point as he unleashed a press conference performance that his dad could truly be proud of with five minutes of fury.
"That was awful. An awful performance by all of us, starting with me not getting the team getting ready to go. I thought we looked great in practice, we came out here, and we were awful. It's not acceptable. It will not be acceptable. It will not be accepted. It will not be tolerated," Mora began.
"Every single one of us in that locker room is making money. With that money comes an obligation to do your job all the time, not just once in a while. All the time. Otherwise you cheat the people who are giving you the money."
And the intensity only picked up from there as the coach began fielding questions from reporters.
On a player getting kicked out of the game…
"I'm ashamed of myself that a player got kicked out of a game on a team that I coach. That's happened once before in my 15 years as a head coach. It was at UConn, it was a guy on the bench. For that to happen today is embarrassing to me. It will absolutely not be tolerated in this program."
On the state of the program and what's next…
"I will tell you right now, the hammer is coming down. G– damn right."
On players potentially departing the program…
"There's no chance they'll be here. Zero chance. There's already a list and the list is getting longer. I'm not going to put up with this. I know how to turn programs around, I've done it four times."
On what he will change this week as a coach…
"I'm going to be an asshole. And if they don't like it, there's a door and they can walk their ass right out."
On players not buying into his messaging…
"You discipline them. You get rid of them. You get them out, get their ass out of here. If they're not going to do it our way, they're not going to be here. That goes for everybody. I'm not just talking about players. I'm talking about everybody that touches this program is equally responsible."
On his frustration…
"I'm pissed. Because there's a lot of stuff that has come to a head."
Jim Mora talked about his ability to turn programs around with the Falcons, UCLA, and UConn. He also pointed to what he learned from his father in his time with the Saints and Colts.
The good news for Mora is that he's already exceeded Colorado State's win total from the 2025 season when they went 2-10 and Jay Norvell was fired. But it appears that the program still has a long way to go to get to the point where he would be satisfied.
