The end of a sports dynasty rarely comes with a definitive announcement. More often, it arrives quietly through tough losses and aging rosters. For the Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr , both of those may have arrived after their Play-In Tournament loss to the Phoenix Suns .
For nearly a decade, Kerr has been the architect of one of the most dominant runs in NBA history. Since taking over in 2014, he led the Warriors to four championships and six Finals appearances, building a revolutionary system centered around the generational brilliance of Stephen Curry .
But now, following a disappointing Play-In exit, even Kerr himself is acknowledging the reality that all great runs eventually end, and didn’t try to sugarcoat the situation at all when speaking postgame about his future on the franchise.
“I don't know what's going to happen. I still love coaching, but I get it, these jobs all have an expiration date,” Kerr stated .
The end of a dynasty
Kerr’s tenure with Golden State has already exceeded the typical lifespan of most NBA coaches. He had sustained success across multiple eras, from revolutionizing the game with the team’s long-range philosophy from 2015 to 2018, which led to three championships, to losing in the Finals in 2019 and then incorporating youth that unexpectedly led to one more ring in 2022.
Kerr’s adaptability has always been at the forefront, yet he recognized that change is part of the cycle, regardless of the franchise’s continued success.
“There's a run that happens, when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas and all that. If that's the case, then I will be just nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise in front of our fans and to coach Steph Curry, Dray, the whole group,” he said.
“It might still go on, it may not,” added Kerr. “I don't know at this point, but we all need to step away a little bit and then reconvene.”
Kerr’s comments feel like, perhaps for the first time, an acknowledgment that the dynasty may be nearing its end. After constant questions surrounding the franchise’s ability to maximize its championship window throughout its injury-filled season, the head coach might be signaling, or even urging, for change.
Yet he hasn’t closed the door on a comeback. Jimmy Butler is expected to return next season following his season-ending torn ACL, and Curry still appears capable of elevating his game when it matters most , as he showed in the Warriors’ final matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers .
What’s clear, however, is that their loss against the Suns, in which they really never looked to be in control, is a sign of the times for the roster. Not to mention that he even initiated an emotional huddle between him and the last remnants of their past dynasty, Curry and Draymond Green , at the end of the game, a seemingly final farewell on the hardcourt.
Important offseason
Whatever Kerr’s future may hold, the Warriors still face one of the most important offseasons in their recent history. Owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr . must decide whether to retool around the core and stick with their longtime head coach, or begin the transition to a new phase.
But whatever the decision, Kerr says it will be mutual between him and the front office.
“The plan is to take a little time and eventually sit down and talk with Joe and Mike. We've always had a good partnership, collaboration, and see where they are, and I'll tell them where I am, and we'll talk about what's next for the Warriors,” Kerr shared. “And we will come down with a collaborative decision.”
In many ways, the loss feels less like an ending and more like a crossroads for the franchise. Kerr’s tenure has always defied expectations to continue the Warriors’ dynasty. He’s already cemented his legacy as one of the most successful coaches in league history.
Whether Ker continues on the sidelines in Golden State or not, his impact on the game and on the franchise is undeniable. Now, the only question left is what comes next for him, and for their storied dynasty.
