If there's one player who has dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers news cycle, it's Joey Porter Jr. That's largely because of his ongoing contract saga, with no clear path to a resolution, other than reaching an agreement, of course.
Just about everyone across the NFL is waiting to see how this unfolds, with even trade rumors entering the conversation. However, the Steelers are unlikely to trade Porter . Instead, he could play out the final season of his rookie contract, receive the franchise tag in 2027, and resume negotiations next offseason.

That puts plenty of pressure on Porter heading into the 2026 season. But if he performs at a high level, that pressure could ultimately pay off in a big way.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell named Porter one of the NFL players facing the most pressure this season , but he also believes the Steelers cornerback could position himself for an even more massive payday.
"The second-generation Steelers defender has allowed a 71.2 passer rating as a pro, including just one touchdown over his first three seasons combined. The Steelers have an excellent pass rush, which makes life easier for cornerbacks, but Porter looks like one of the league's best young players at the position," Barnwell wrote.

"Porter is likely looking for north of $30 million per season, while the Steelers can point to a relatively team-friendly franchise-tag situation. General manager Omar Khan could tag Porter in 2027 ($23.2 million) and even in 2028 ($27.7 million) without needing to get close to that $30 million figure on a multiyear deal."

Porter's numbers show why he and his representatives should feel confident pursuing a contract worth more than $30 million per season. They also show a young corner with a trajectory continuously going up with perhaps the best yet to come.

Porter has improved his PFF grade over his first three seasons while consistently making plays on the ball. His ability to erase opposing wide receivers and disrupt passes has established him as one of the Steelers' most crucial defensive players. Now, he has another opportunity to turn that production into significant leverage at the negotiating table.
The question is whether Porter and the Steelers can find common ground before the regular season officially begins. If they can't, Porter will have an entire season to make his case for the payday he believes he deserves. That's assuming this saga doesn't take another twist in the road.
