Week Zero Kicks Off in Dublin

The 2026 college football season officially launches this Saturday in Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland. A rematch between the TCU Horned Frogs and the North Carolina Tar Heels heads the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. TCU enters the game with high confidence after a 9-4 finish last season, while North Carolina looks to rebound from a disappointing 4-8 campaign. This Week Zero table-setter across the pond carries massive weight for both programs as they try to set the tone early.

Last year, the Frogs eviscerated the Heels 48-14 in Chapel Hill during new UNC head coach Bill Belichick's collegiate debut. Since 2018, North Carolina has not missed a bowl game, marking the first such low point in Mack Brown's tenure. Despite the on-field struggles, Belichick brought a circus of attention to the program and secured a top-20 ranked recruiting class. Now the focus shifts to whether the Tar Heels can finally compete against the Horned Frogs in a neutral site showdown. Can the Heels avoid another blowout on foreign soil? That's the question hanging over the green grass in Ireland.

TCU Loses Star Playmaker Before Kickoff

A major blow for TCU arrives just days before the game as star wide receiver Jordan Dwyer will be inactive for the matchup. According to Yahoo Sports , Dwyer made the trip to Dublin but will not play against the Tar Heels. This absence leaves a massive hole in the offense, especially with former starter Josh Hoover now at Indiana. Last season, Dwyer ranked as TCU's No. 2 WR, securing 54 catches, 730 yards, and seven touchdowns.

The pressure now falls squarely on new quarterback Jaden Craig to perform in his FBS debut without his primary target. Craig was a dominant dual-threat signal caller at Harvard and is expected to lean on his legs to keep the offense rolling. TCU now expects Ed Small and South Alabama transfer Jeremy Scott to step up as primary receivers in Dwyer's absence. Small caught for 207 yards last year, which was No. 6 on the team, while Scott posted a little over 400 yards at South Alabama.

The substantial gap between Dwyer and both Small and Scott will increase pressure on Craig to excel. TCU brings back running back Jeremy Payne, who played a major role in their Alamo Bowl win over USC. Payne ran 13 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, added six catches for 50 yards, and netted the winning 35-yard score in overtime. The Horned Frogs also return receiver Jordan Dwyer's teammate from last year's meeting, but the loss of the star playmaker changes the entire offensive dynamic. We saw what happens when TCU lacks a go-to guy; they stall.

Craig Must Step Up Immediately

Jaden Craig has no time to warm up and must impress immediately to enter the conversation as one of the top QBs in the Big 12 Conference. The offense needs a spark, and without Dwyer's route-running and big-play ability, the passing game could stall against a disciplined defense. North Carolina hired offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, whose scheme aims to confuse defenses and maximize success for his skill talent. If Craig cannot handle the pressure, the Frogs could struggle to match the speed of the Heels' new attack.

TCU is searching for something approaching the heights of Sonny Dykes' debut season, which ended in the National Championship Game. The coaching staff is debuting a new OC, Gordon Sammis from Connecticut, to call the plays from the sideline. This is a critical test for the new leadership group. If they can't find a rhythm early, the season could spiral quickly. The team must win this game to prove they are still a powerhouse in the conference. It's that simple: win or face questions all August.
