The 2026 season for José Suárez ended with a 6.60 ERA and a roster spot that never felt safe. According to Battery Power , the pitcher made eight appearances for the Braves after a roller-coaster offseason that saw him DFA'd by two different teams. He started the year on the Opening Day roster as a long reliever but his debut on March 31 against the Athletics killed any hope of him being a starter. That inauspicious start marked the end of his time as a potential rotation piece for Atlanta.
Expectations were low from the start, yet Suárez showed flashes of dominance against Washington in a spot start during September 2025. He followed that up with three more shutout innings against the Nationals just days later. Despite those bright spots, the valleys were deeper than the peaks for the left-hander this year. He mostly pitched in low-leverage innings after his March debut, and the results were rarely good enough to keep him in the big leagues.

Bad Luck or Bad Pitching?
The numbers tell a confusing story about Suárez's performance in 2026. His FIP- of 66, which translates to a 2.73 FIP, suggests he suffered from some bad luck compared to his ERA. Battery Power notes that he also benefited from a low HR/FB rate, which might have masked some issues with his underlying stuff. However, his ERA- of 158 indicates that runs scored against him were a major problem regardless of luck.
Projection systems like Steamer saw him as a decent long man, while ZiPS was more optimistic about his value as a swing guy. The reality on the field did not match the optimism of those models. He struggled to keep the ball on the ground or avoid barrels despite his usual ability to generate whiffs. The gaps in his performance were too wide to ignore for a team with World Series hopes.
A Fringe Player in Atlanta
Franchise history shows that the Braves have tried to make Suárez work before, but the results were mixed. In January 2026, before he was DFA'd, he had first been obtained via a trade involving the Angels and Ian Anderson. The Baltimore Orioles claimed him, but Atlanta brought him back just a few days later after the Orioles released him. This back-and-forth life as a fringe player defined his year.

In 2025, he only made seven appearances for the Braves, while his 2026 run was barely better with eight total outings. Once that window shut, his achievements as both a starter and swingman during 2021 and 2022 diminished. The team needs reliable arms, and Suárez simply did not provide that consistency this season. His time in Atlanta feels like it has run its course.
The offseason schedule is already set for the Braves as they look to improve their pitching depth. Free agency opens on November 1 at 5 p.m. ET, just five days after the World Series ends. This is the deadline for the club to issue Qualifying Offers and set their contract options. The big moves for Atlanta will likely involve the club options for Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies.
While Suárez's future remains uncertain, the team must focus on securing their core stars before the market heats up. The GM meetings in Las Vegas from November 9 to 12 will set the tone for the rest of the winter. Atlanta needs to find a pitcher who can handle high-leverage innings without the wild swings Suárez showed this year. The clock is ticking on a busy December 1 deadline.
