It seems that Josh Johnson will not leave the Cincinnati Bengal s. The veteran quarterback has found another chance to play in the NFL after having trained with the Bengals during the pre-season period.
This deal is quite normal for Johnson, who has been spending all his playing career moving from one team to another and trying to stay in the game. Now, Johnson finds an opportunity to continue working with the Bengals and keep their offense fresh from the practice squad.

According to Adam Schefter, on September 1, Johnson was signed by the Bengals again to their practice squad. In spite of the fact that the Bengals have chosen Burrow and Flacco as their only quarterbacks in the initial roster of 53 players, Johnson can give the team another experienced player to wait for in the case of necessity. It should be mentioned that Josh Johnson is accompanied by Sean Clifford in the practice squad.
Johnson is familiar with the building and worked with Burrow, Flacco, and Clifford throughout training camp and preseason. An August 28 piece on Bengals.com talked about Johnson's experience and how much the veteran is enjoying helping younger quarterbacks develop while he himself continues developing.
This is why Johnson will help the Bengals with his presence. He's not just some extra player to have around practice; Johnson has played for 14 NFL teams and appeared in 12 games, including five games for the Washington Redskins this past year. In 2025, he threw 34 out of 54 for 372 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions, while rushing for 55 yards and another touchdown.
Johnson is actually familiar with the Bengals organization from before. He was a member of the Bengals' roster at some point of the 2013 season, which featured Andy Dalton at QB. Over ten years later, he's back at the same place, only in a very different quarterback room.
Also, during his time in this preseason with the Bengals, Johnson proved that he has what it takes. In a preseason game with Cincinnati against the Chicago Bears , Johnson managed to post a passer rating higher than 113.
He also had a touchdown pass to the rookie wide receiver, Colbie Young , in another preseason game. These plays were very important for him as a quarterback who managed to stay afloat after every team cut.
The Bengals have chosen experience for their QB2 in Flacco, whereas Johnson is an additional safety net who does not take up any 53-man roster spots.
There is also a bigger reason why the Bengals value him. Johnson has spent years studying different offensive systems, mechanics, and QB styles. He has learned from coaches such as Jim and John Harbaugh and worked with quarterbacks ranging from Dalton to Jayden Daniels .
That knowledge now becomes part of the Bengals' practice squad. Johnson's NFL journey keeps moving. However, this time he does not have to find a new locker room but stays right where he is.
