Newcastle United have stepped up their midfield search by making contact over RB Leipzig 's Nicolas Seiwald, with Graeme Bailey for TeamTalk reporting that the Austria international is among the names under active consideration at St James' Park.
As Newcastle reshape the squad under Matthias Jaissle, the need in central areas has become increasingly obvious. The report states that the club have "made enquiries about RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald" and that he "has emerged as another name on Newcastle's shortlist" after the departure of Bruno Guimaraes. In a market where availability and fit are often as important as status, Seiwald looks like a profile Newcastle's recruitment team value.
Seiwald, 25, brings pedigree and tactical flexibility. He is described as "an important part of Leipzig's squad", while his "experience at the highest level makes him an attractive option for Newcastle." That matters for a club now trying to replace quality and reliability in the same window.

Newcastle have already looked elsewhere. They "failed to persuade Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to leave Marseille", while talks are said to be continuing over Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha . Yet this is not a one-track process. The report makes clear that "the club's recruitment department are working across several options and Seiwald is a player they appreciate."
One obvious attraction is familiarity. There is "a familiar link to new head coach Mattias Jaissle, who knows Seiwald extremely well from their time together at Red Bull Salzburg." Seiwald was "a key part of the Salzburg side that won the Austrian title under Jaissle", which naturally strengthens the case if Newcastle want a player who can absorb coaching demands quickly.
That connection already carries weight inside the current build. Newcastle "have already completed the signing of another former Jaissle player", with Amar Dedic arriving, and Seiwald "could therefore become another former Jaissle charge on Newcastle's radar".
There is no indication of a bid yet, but the groundwork is being laid. Newcastle are "continuing to assess the market before deciding which target to push for most strongly" and are "gathering information on what it would take to bring the Austrian to St James' Park."
From a football perspective, the attraction is straightforward. Seiwald can operate "in a box-to-box role, as a defensive midfielder or even as a centre-back when required", offering the sort of versatility elite squads increasingly demand. After exits in midfield, that profile could prove highly valuable as Newcastle push towards the new Premier League season.
As a Newcastle fan, this report feels encouraging and unsettling in equal measure. Encouraging because Seiwald sounds like a smart, sensible target. He is experienced, tactically flexible and already knows what Jaissle wants. If the club really do appreciate him, that part makes complete sense.
The concern is the wider picture. Newcastle supporters know the midfield has already been hit hard, and replacing players of real stature is never simple. Reading that the club "failed to persuade Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to leave Marseille" does not exactly calm nerves, while the phrase "one of a number of options being considered" can sometimes sound like there is no clear first-choice deal in place.
There is also the fear of drifting too long in the market. Newcastle need more than promise, they need certainty. Seiwald may well be good enough, and the Jaissle connection could accelerate things, but fans will want action rather than another week of monitoring, assessing and gathering information.
The biggest issue is balance. Losing Bruno Guimaraes already felt seismic. If Tonali has gone too, this is no minor refresh, it is a rebuild in one of the most important areas of the pitch. Seiwald could help, absolutely, but he cannot be the only serious move. Newcastle need presence, control and leadership in midfield before the season starts, otherwise the anxiety around this squad will only grow.
