Liverpool's search for greater stability at right-back remains one of the clearest themes of the early Andoni Iraola era, and the latest update around Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to remove one of the more eye-catching possibilities.
As first reported via talkSPORT, with information from Guillem Balague, there is no prospect of the former Liverpool defender leaving Real Madrid in January. That matters because his name had inevitably resurfaced amid Liverpool's current need for a more settled solution on the right side of defence.
Ronald Araujo has helped cover the issue and has offered quality, presence and adaptability. Even so, he is naturally more at home in central defence, and with his current arrangement due to end after the season, Liverpool still face an important decision over how they build that area of the squad for the longer term.
Any suggestion of an imminent Alexander-Arnold return now looks firmly closed off. Balague was definitive in his assessment, saying: "I can tell you 100% he's not moving from Real Madrid in January." He went further by adding: "So forget that story, that's gone, talk about something else because that's not going to happen. He has got a nutritionist, he's got a physical coach that works with him at home. He feels the best he's ever felt in his career, physically anyway."
The broader picture is equally clear. Alexander-Arnold committed to Real Madrid on a six-year contract through to 2031, and the intention on all sides is for that move to succeed. Balague underlined that point too: "Now of course he's going to be prepared for when his opportunity arises. He signed a six-year contract for a reason. He wants to succeed at Real Madrid and the intention is to stay there for a long time."
For Liverpool, much may now depend on Conor Bradley's fitness and availability. If Iraola can rely on him consistently, the urgency in the market may soften. If not, recruitment staff may need to consider whether a short-term fix or a more permanent right-back signing becomes necessary.
There is also a wider footballing point here. Liverpool have lacked some creativity in recent league matches, and Alexander-Arnold's range of passing would naturally have appealed in that context. Yet sentiment and suitability are different things, and this latest report suggests there is no active route back in the winter window.
That does not automatically settle the longer-term conversation around Liverpool's right-back position, particularly if Araujo returns to Barcelona as expected. What it does settle is the immediate debate. Liverpool can park the Alexander-Arnold angle for now and focus on internal solutions or alternative recruitment targets.
With a demanding season still unfolding, clarity has value. On this issue, Liverpool appear to have it.
It probably makes sense to close the book on this one, at least for now. A January return always felt more emotional than realistic, and this update confirms exactly that. Liverpool have more pressing questions to answer than revisiting a split that still feels complicated.
The bigger issue is what Iraola wants this position to look like in the long term. If the right-back role is going to be vital in ball progression and chance creation, then the club need a specialist there, not simply another player filling in. Araujo can do a job and has qualities, but the balance of the side matters, especially when creativity has dipped.
Bradley remains a huge part of the discussion. There is obvious talent there, and if fitness holds, he can still make the role his own. But Liverpool cannot build such an important position on hope alone. Availability is a quality in itself.
There is also a sense that the club need to be ruthless and forward-looking. Too much energy can be wasted on old names and old stories. The smarter move would be identifying the next outstanding right-back, someone suited to Iraola's demands, capable in possession, aggressive without the ball, and reliable over a full season.
If that player is already at the club, great. If not, Liverpool need to act decisively when the time comes.
