Juan Matheus' performance in 2026 warrants giving him a look for the 2027 MLB roster
The Miami Marlins ' list of promising young players is a mile long and many show big-time, big potential, but perhaps no youngster in the organization has as big a rocket on his back as

The Fish acquired Matheus before last season as one of four players in return from the Ryan Weathers trade . He responded to his new environment by making himself at home rather quickly, hitting .266 with 16 home runs, 85 RBI, and 30 stolen bases. Those numbers reflect a solid season all around, especially considering his 2.40 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Those are already solid numbers, but the more fascinating part of Matheus' story is that he amazingly accomplished them while moving through three levels of the organization in the course of the 2026 campaign.
A switch-hitter who makes excellent contact, Matheus has consistently demonstrated an ability to get on base and is not afraid to work deep counts and take walks. As the season moved forward and he kept moving along, he began attacking his at-bats more aggressively, resulting in a noticeable increase in power. At the same time, his successful run was boosting his confidence… every step of the way.
Defensively, Matheus looks stellar, and there's no reason to think that won't translate to the next level.

"[Matheus'] biggest strengths on defense are his reaction time and first step, which lend themselves well to the hot corner, where he has plenty of arm," the slick infielder's MLB prospect report states . "The Marlins value defensive versatility, though, and will likely continue to give him time across the infield."
"After initially playing more shortstop at the lower levels, Matheus appears to have found a home at third base, with some second sprinkled in."
The Marlins' emphasis on defensive versatility should allow Matheus to continue moving around the infield as he develops. And if there's not already enough to like about the up-and-coming star, he shows great diligence and work ethic. At season's end, he was awarded the organization's 2026 Student of the Year provides another glimpse into the player behind the statistics.
On top of putting up some noticeable numbers, it's pretty clear that Matheus has caught the eye of Miami president of baseball operations Peter Bendix . Miami's baseball boss saw the emerging power, speed, contact ability, and defensive ability when he traded him

"We think he's a very good third baseman, somebody who can play shortstop as well," the club's baseball boss said , according to the Miami Herald . "Another player who does a lot of things well. He doesn't strike out. Steals a lot of bases. We think there's emerging power there. It's hard to find all of those ingredients in someone... who is a good defender there."
With success at the Triple-A level already under his belt, Matheus enters the next phase of his development with legitimate major-league potential. A strong showing in Spring Training or a potential injury on the MLB roster could transport him to the top floor of professional baseball. And he may be pushing that button to the top as soon as Opening Day.
