The Ohio State Buckeyes received encouraging news regarding the injury to starting quarterback Julian Sayin, but the Buckeyes will have to continue without him for the foreseeable future.
Ryan Day said the injury to Sayin's throwing shoulder is healing, providing a positive outlook for the quarterback's long-term recovery. However, he said Sayin would not be returning anytime soon.
"I think this has been a decent outcome for us and for him," Day said . "This thing looks to be healing. It's not gonna be next week or next month. It's gonna to take some time, but 1 think certainly for the long term, we feel like we're on a good track here."
Sayin, who was a finalist for last year's Heisman Trophy, suffered the injury during the Oct. 17 game against Indiana. He was later seen leaving the locker room with his arm in a sling.
Following the injury, Day said Ohio State was preparing as if Sayin could miss the remainder of the 2026 season. That possibility remains likely in the final month of the season. The Buckeyes struggled in the first game without Sayin, falling 30-18 at USC. Backup quarterback Luke Fahey completed 21 of 38 passes for 260 yards, one touchdown.
Before the injury, Sayin completed 68.2% of his passes for 2,007 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had two rushing touchdowns. Needless to say, Sayin is nowhere near the type of production he put up last year. This also puts a damper on Jeremiah Smith's Heisman hopes for this season.
The No. 12 Buckeyes host No. 23 Oregon on Saturday before facing Northwestern, Nebraska and Michigan to close the regular season. They'll need to navigate that stretch and hope the College Football Playoff is still a likely scenario.
