Kansas Football Quarterback Battle Remains Wide Open Heading Into Fall Camp
Kansas entered the offseason knowing replacing Jalon Daniels would be one of the biggest storylines of 2026. Months later, it appears the Jayhawks are no closer to naming a clear successor.
According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer, the battle between Cole Ballard , Isaiah Marshall and Chase Jenkins remains unsettled heading into fall camp.
"It's still a real open competition and still a competitive battle," a source told CBS Sports.
That report aligns with what many expected coming out of spring practice. While Ballard, Marshall and Jenkins each bring something different to the table, none has separated himself enough to claim the starting job.
Ballard enters the fall as the most experienced quarterback within the program. The redshirt junior has spent multiple seasons learning behind Daniels and has remained a steady presence in the quarterback room throughout his career.
Marshall, meanwhile, continues to generate excitement because of his athleticism. The redshirt sophomore rushed for 160 yards last season and averaged 10.7 yards per carry in limited opportunities. His dual-threat ability has made him a popular choice among fans looking toward the future of the position.
Jenkins may be the most experienced starter of the group after beginning his career at Rice . The transfer brings valuable game experience, although injuries limited his ability to fully participate during portions of the spring.
Whoever wins the job will inherit an offense undergoing significant changes. Kansas returns to an Andy Kotelnicki-led scheme while integrating new pieces at running back, wide receiver and along the offensive line.
The Jayhawks finished 77th nationally in total offense last season and averaged 26.5 points per game. Improvement at quarterback will be critical if Kansas hopes to return to bowl eligibility in 2026.
For now, however, the biggest takeaway from CBS Sports' report is simple: the race for QB1 remains wide open, and Lance Leipold's staff still has a major decision to make before Week 1.
