- Kats handle business against former Southland foe
In the first buy-game of Sam Houston 's tenure, they did exactly what they needed too.
The Bearkats busted out to a 31-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Sam Houston knocked off the Colonels xx-xx for its first win of the season.
From the jump, Sam Houston's offense came ready to play. Sophomore quarterback Landyn Locke found senior receiver Tim Burns Jr. in stride for a 65-yard score. That was the first of three deep passes Locke connected with to his receivers.
Locke was 3-of-4 on his passes of over 15 yards, with the other two going to Chris Redd and Kamari Maxwell . Reed's catch was 53 yards, while Maxwell's went for 48.
The Bearkat passing attack remained in step with how it looked for the first two games. Locke tossed for over 300 yards for the third straight week, but Sam Houston's run game still struggled.
Locke tossed the ball around the yard for 322 yards and completed 68% of his passes.
Against an FCS opponent, Sam Houston's defense showed that they have it in them. Railyn Adams hauled in an interception, the first forced turnover the Kats have forced this season. He was followed by She'Fon Boyd getting one. Sam Houston held the Nicholls offense to under 150 yards in the first half, and then kept them in bay for the second half.
While the opponent was an FCS game, the Bearkats got an opportunity to start a domino effect as they needed things to start falling their way.
Now, Sam Houston will turn its attention to Texas Tech before a bye week and moving into midweek CUSA Play.
