- Kaytron Allen Gives Miami Dolphins a Fresh Backfield Option
The next opportunity in Miami's backfield may belong to a player who was on another roster less than two weeks ago.
Rookie running back Kaytron Allen joined the Dolphins through a waiver claim from Washington on Oct. 9, according to the team's transaction log. After arriving shortly before the Cincinnati game and then sitting through Miami's bye, he has had additional time to prepare for a possible debut against the New York Jets.

That does not guarantee a role Sunday. It does give Miami another option at a position where availability has become a central part of the weekly planning.
Backfield Banged Up
De'Von Achane is on injured reserve, and coach Jeff Hafley said Monday that Jaylen Wright had aggravated an injury. Wright's status remained something to evaluate as the Dolphins returned to their regular practice routine.
Allen's opportunity therefore involves both depth and timing. Miami needs backs ready to handle assignments now, while a rebuilding season gives the organization reason to examine what a rookie might offer beyond one weekend.

Hafley's explanation for the acquisition, reported independently by Miami Dolphins On SI, emphasized Allen's physical running style and the staff's familiarity with him from the draft process, joint practices and preseason competition against Washington.
Already Up Close and Personal
That familiarity is useful. A waiver claim is not always an introduction to a completely unknown player. In Allen's case, Miami had already watched him work against its own defense before evaluating whether to bring him into the building.

The available NFL sample is small. His official player page lists 12 carries for 41 yards across four games with Washington, an average of 3.4 yards per attempt. Those numbers establish experience, not a reliable projection of what his production will be in another offense.
The Dolphins already have a productive option in Ollie Gordon II . Miami's official statistics credit Gordon with 236 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 47 attempts. His five-yard average provides a foundation the offense can try to build on rather than replace.
Allen's first assignment, if he is active, would be to show he can support that operation. The evaluation should include ball security, understanding the play call and handling responsibilities when he does not receive a carry. A dependable reserve has to contribute beyond the moments that appear in the rushing totals.

There is no need to frame the addition as a solution to everything Miami has lost in the backfield. Allen has not yet established himself in this offense, and the coaching staff still has to determine the appropriate workload.
What the claim does provide is another chance to find useful young depth without spending a draft choice on a trade.
For an 0-5 team, that is a worthwhile opportunity. Allen does not have to transform the offense Sunday. He needs to show the Dolphins that their familiarity with him can become trust on game day.
