The Boston Red Sox looked impressive over the weekend after sweeping the New York Yankees in the four-game series. While the club is still in last place in the AL East, Boston is only 4.5 games back from qualifying for a Wild Card spot for the postseason. On Monday, insider Ken Rosenthal shared what move he thinks the franchise must make for a legitimate playoff push.
While guest appearing on "Foul Territory," the famed insider for The Athletic believes the Wild Card race will come down to which teams make the smartest acquisitions ahead of the trade deadline. He claims the Red Sox could become a threat in the American League if the front office were to trade for a talented infielder who also improves the offense.
"Now, the Red Sox are really interesting in the American League," said Rosenthal. "Because they're outside of the top teams, even that I mentioned. They're 4.5 games back in the Wild Card. But we saw this weekend what they can do when they pitch. Now, if they get another bat, and maybe it's somebody [who] can be just kind of a solid guy in the infield, pretty much anywhere, then they maybe they get interesting. Maybe they go on a run."
Rosenthal also seems to like the Red Sox's chances due to the upcoming schedule. Boston is set to take on the Washington Nationals , Los Angeles Angels , and New York Mets in three of their next four series. It's almost a perfect situation for the team to right the ship before the August 3 trade deadline and potentially make a big move by then.
While adding another solid bat to the infield would help, so would getting healthy. The Red Sox have 11 players on the IL, with Roman Anthony most recently being shifted to the 60-day IL.
Boston will have a chance to extend its win streak to five on Monday, immediately after just sweeping the Yankees. The Red Sox are scheduled to take on the Nationals in the first matchup of a three-game home series.
