KENT — Kent State's MAC Center is usually filled to the brim when the Golden Flashes' rival hits town.
Flashes men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff hopes he won't have to wait until Akron's Feb. 28 visit to see the place jam packed. An opponent on the brink of cracking the Associated Press Top 25 is on deck.
The Flashes will try to hand the Miami RedHawks their first loss on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The RedHawks (19-0), Arizona and Nebraska are the nation's remaining NCAA Division I teams.
"The MAC Center is a really tough place when it is loud," Senderoff said. "They have a really good team, and we have a really good team. Boy, it would be great to have this be a sellout. I think our guys deserve it. I think they do for every game, but for that game they do."
Miami already has survived a couple of tough Mid-American Conference tests this season.
The RedHawks rallied from a four-point deficit in the final 3½ minutes to beat defending champion Akron on Jan. 3. The win avenged a loss to the Zips in last year's MAC Tournament championship game .
Miami needed overtime to beat Buffalo 105-102 on Jan. 17. Elan Elmer hit a 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime. After Buffalo rallied from a six-point deficit to tie the score, Peter Suder made a 3 with three seconds left to win it.
A win will push Kent State (14-4, 5-1) into a first-place tie with Miami in the loss column.
"We're playing a really good team, potentially a top-25 team in our building," Senderoff said. "It's the only time we play them in the regular season. Those games have more meaning in the MAC when you play a team only once.
"I'm excited for the game. Games like this are great to be a part of."
