On Thursday, the Atlanta Hawks suffered a 51-point blowout loss to the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Thus, ending their season.
Once reality set in for the Hawks, Knicks legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier offered the players some advice to wash away their playoff blues, per New York Basketball.
“Go get drunk,” he said. “You did the best you could.” Frazier also mentioned that Atlanta head coach Quin Snyder is a friend of his.
Jalen Johnson finished with a team-high 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. CJ McCollum and Nickeil Alexander-Walker each added 11 points. The Hawks concluded a season in which they went 46-36 and made their first playoff appearance since 2024. In January, they traded away Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for McCollum and Corey Kispert . Furthermore, Johnson became an NBA All-Star, averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game.
The Hawks’ last big Playoff run came in 2021, when they reached the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks . From 2022 to 2025, the Hawks qualified for the NBA Play-In Tournament.
Nevertheless, they gave New York all they could, a team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals a year ago.
Meanwhile, the Knicks, who went on a 61-10 run after trailing 12-11 , will face either the Boston Celtics/Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
By trading away their marquee player for established talent and making the playoffs, the Hawks remain competitive. In all, Frazier has a solid point; Atlanta did their best and should feel good about it.
