After falling behind 76-49 at halftime of Game 4 of the NBA Finals , it would make sense for fans to chalk up another L for the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs .
Mitch Johnson's squad was unconscious from beyond the arc, making an NBA record number of 3s in the first half at 14, and even after a strong run in the third, the Knicks would still need to overcome a double-digit deficit to send fans home from MSG with a smile on their faces.
And yet, in the end, New York did just that, with the Knicks getting things within one point heading into the final second and setting OG Anunoby to score the go-ahead bucket on a second-chance opportunity .
Taking a timeout with 5.7 seconds left in regulation, Mike Brown got his troops together for one final push at a last-second – literally – comeback, and his players did not disappoint. After Jalen Brunson launched a 30-footer with 4.4 seconds left in regulation but it bounced off the rim, freeing up a second chance opportunity for his teammates. Anunoby collected the ball and tipped it in with 2.1 seconds right under the bucket, going up by one point against a Spurs team with a timeout. San Antonio inbounded the ball but couldn't get off a meaningful shot, securing a New York win as famous fans charged the court.
As "The City That Never Sleeps" begins to celebrate deep into the night, the Spurs will have to regroup in a hurry as the series heads back to San Antonio for a Saturday night Game 5. With momentum at their backs, it will be interesting to see if the series then returns to New York next week, or if Karl-Anthony Towns and company close things out in five.
