If Oklahoma is going to clean up the New Mexico game the right way, it starts with one of the more physical backs the Sooners have seen so far this season.
Scottre Humphrey is not a gadget piece and he is not a space back living on perimeter designs. He is a 5-foot-10, 215-pound senior who runs like he is offended by first contact.

That style matters for a Sooners defense coming off a 17-10 loss at Michigan .
Oklahoma was solid for stretches in Ann Arbor and still gave up enough on the ground late to let the game get away from it. Humphrey is exactly the kind of back who will test whether that was a one-week problem or a real soft spot. He finishes runs. He leans through arm tackles. He does not need a perfect hole to create an ugly second-and-medium.
The production is already there.
Through two games, Humphrey has 28 carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns, good for 6.2 yards per attempt. He arrived at New Mexico after a big FCS run at Montana State, where he rushed for 1,386 yards in 2024 and earned All-American honors. A high ankle sprain limited him in 2025 and knocked the explosiveness out of his game. Healthy again in 2026, he looks like the clear feature back Jason Eck wants to build around.

The tape profile is straightforward.
Humphrey is at his best when he can hit downhill, absorb the first body, and keep his legs turning. He has the lower-body thickness to move piles and the balance to stay upright in tight interior traffic. That alone makes him dangerous near the goal line and on early downs. What makes him more than a pure thumper is the second-level burst. He looks like a bowling ball until the lane opens, then he can still separate enough that chasing him from behind becomes a problem.
He also stays on the field for a reason.
Humphrey is a plus pass protector for a power back and can catch the ball well enough out of the backfield to matter on third down. That three-down value is important because New Mexico's offense is already built around managing quarterback uncertainty. Luke Moga and Toa Fa'avae are sharing the job after Jack Layne's season-ending elbow injury. When a team is rotating quarterbacks, the run game stops being complementary and becomes the whole stabilizer.

Humphrey is that stabilizer.
There are still flags.
The 2025 ankle injury is recent enough that workload durability over a full FBS season remains something to prove. Ball security has also been a point of emphasis. Power backs who invite contact can get careless with the ball if they lower it through traffic. Oklahoma 's defense should be actively trying to make that an issue.
For the Sooners, the plan has to be physical and impatient. Taylor Wein , David Stone , and Jayden Jackson give Oklahoma the kind of interior talent that can wreck a back's timing before he ever gets moving.
That is the key with Humphrey. Let him climb to full speed and he becomes a harder tackle and a better open-field problem. Disrupt him early, collapse the first gap, and force him into arm-tackle chaos, and the defense can win the down. Owen Heinecke and the linebacker level have to be disciplined here. Overrun one fit and Humphrey has the balance to turn a five-yard gain into something more uncomfortable.

This is also a focus game for Brent Venables in the broader sense. Oklahoma cannot afford a sleepy home performance before the SEC stretch starts getting heavier. New Mexico is 2-0 and good enough to punish soft edges. If the Sooners load the box, set a hard front, and make Humphrey earn every yard the hard way, they can drag the Lobos into exactly the kind of obvious passing situations a dual-quarterback operation does not want.
The scouting summary is simple. Humphrey is a physical, angry runner with enough burst to punish missed fits and enough pass-game value to stay on the field.
Oklahoma's front seven is built to handle that kind of back if it plays with urgency. If it does not, Saturday gets a lot more annoying than it needs to be.
